Packing Green
What you put in your suitcase can help minimize your ecological impacts and maximize a positive experience for you and the local communities. Here are some ideas:
- Pack clothes in nature friendly colors, like greens and kakis. Vivid colors can disrupt the natural balance of ecosystems and scare away the fauna.
- Remember that waste disposal could be difficult depending on the places you visit, especially in remote areas, and for that purpose we recommend you to remove all excess packaging.
- Use flat and comfortable shoes for hikes to minimize your tracks and the erosion process.
- Pack gifts for local communities you might be visiting, as well as for people you might take pictures of (avoid giving away money to stop bad habits).
- Binoculars to observe the wildlife up close.
- A flashlight for night hikes, usually when most of the wildlife activities happen.
- Camera with enough memory cards or films to catch unique moments.
- Rechargeable batteries, as well as regular one for remote places.
- Warm clothes for the Andes, where there’s usually no heater.
