Shop Responsibly

Shopping in a foreign country is probably the best way to keep souvenirs for life (along with pictures and new friendships!). However, remember to do so in a responsible way, so everybody comes out clean and happy.

First, you should buy handicrafts from local people rather than wide department stores or malls, which is not a difficult thing to do with handicrafts markets in almost every single city and village of the country. Not only could you get a cheaper price, but you will also support the development of local communities.

Avoid buying product made of endangered or protected species, such as sea turtles, corals or meats of wild animals if you eat in local restaurants, such as shark (commonly sold) or dolphins, to mention a few.

When it comes to shopping in local markets, you can go through the fun process of bargaining, commonly done in all places. However, do it in a respectful manner, knowing that local people live from what they sell. Remember some important principles:

- Have an idea of a fair price before starting to bargain, knowing there’s no right price, but just the one you agree on with the seller.

- Don’t look too interested in an item. Sometimes stepping away could help lower the price.

- Be polite and not aggressive, but stay firm in the interaction. Smiling helps!

- Buying several items could help lower the price, especially if you are with a group of friends.

- Do not lie. If you don’t plan on coming back to buy an item, don’t say you will, but simply go away and thank the person for his/her help.

- Know the prices in Spanish. Bargaining in the local language is always better and interactions between you and the seller could be more interesting.

- Do not change your mind once you agreed on a price. It is considered disrespectful.
