Sea Level
Ice sheets in the Arctic are melting at alarming rates.

Environment & Ecosystems

The massive ice sheets in the Arctic are melting at alarming rates. This is causing the oceans to rise. That’s how big these ice sheets are! Most of the world’s population lives on or near the coasts. Rising ocean levels will cause massive devastation and economic catastrophe to population centers worldwide.

The sea level rose by about 1-2 mm per year over the last hundred years. If we use the various emission scenarios of the IPCC for our calculations again, the result is that the sea level will probably rise by 7 to 23 inches (18 to 58 cm) by the end of the 21st century, to which can be added 3.9 to 7.8 inches (10 to 20 cm) if we include the recent melting of the polar ice sheet. This increase is caused by the thermal expansion of the seawater due to the higher temperature, and also by the melting of glaciers. The danger of flooding in low-lying regions (such as Bangladesh or the Mississippi Delta, etc.) will increase as a result.
