Getting Ready
Coast
Bring sun block and insect repellent.

Packing

The Coast can get pretty hot! The most important is to remember to bring sun block and insect repellent, two of the most valuable items in your suitcase. This region has a very relaxed atmosphere, and summer clothing is what you usually wear all year round: shorts, t-shirts and sandals/flip flops. At night you might want to have a long or short sleeved shirt and light pants or jeans. Although during the hot season, temperatures barely drop at night, it might get chilly and windy after sunset during the cooler season. Average temperature varies with the seasons from 26º-31ºC during the day and 21º-26ºC at night. There are mainly two season on the coast: the rainy season (hotter, from December to May) and the dry season (cooler, from June to November). Please read our climate chapter in this section to find out more about climate on the coastal region.

If you plan to visit the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, remember that it could get windy at night, and a sweater might be a good option. Mosquitoes are everywhere, especially during the rainy season. When visiting an hacienda, it makes no doubt that you will have to rub yourself with it as mosquitoes in that area are everywhere! Tennis shoes/sneakers are recommended (and not sandals!) while visiting an hacienda.

Walking comfortably should be your first priority because with the heat and the extensive amount of walking, it’s almost difficult to imagine how shoes that you thought would be alright or have treated you well in your country can turn on you and make you end up with feet full of blisters. An advice would be also to avoid brand new shoes that you haven’t worn and shaped yet, as they might become painful after some walking.

Finally, try to avoid insect repellent that contain DEET. Recent studies have discovered that not only it could affect you physically, but the smell of it could be of strong discomfort for the wildlife. There are many “green” products you can chose from, mostly organic and harmless, but which still offer you a perfect protection against hungry insects.
